Biomass fuel in Southern Thailand: why the supply sits where it does

Southern Thailand fells rubber for replanting every year, and the wood that comes off is real, continuous feedstock — not a residue that happens to exist. That is why plants in the South do not have to haul fuel across the country.

Why rubberwood suits fuel use

A rubber tree yields latex economically for roughly 20–25 years. After that, output falls until the plantation is felled and replanted. That cycle runs continuously and is spread across the whole region, so supply is not tied to a season the way an annual crop is.

More importantly, rubberwood is relatively consistent — one species, similar ages — unlike mixed wood waste, whose calorific value moves with whatever happened to arrive.

The part people overlook: stumps and roots

Felling leaves more than logs. Stumps and roots are dug out too, and were traditionally burned in the field or left to rot.

They are dense and burn well, but they carry soil and stones and must be screened before chipping. Skip that and the soil becomes ash and abrasive grit that wears the furnace lining.

Using this material therefore reduces open burning — a dry-season PM2.5 source in the South — while adding to the feedstock pool.

What a plant should ask a supplier

• Do you screen foreign matter before chipping? If not, expect high ash and rapid wear.
• How much do calorific value and moisture move between batches? An attractive average means little if batches differ widely.
• How continuous is supply in the wet season? Moisture and field access both change.
• Do you produce, or buy and resell? A producer controls the spec; a reseller controls only what they could source.

Why Trang

Trang sits in the middle of the Southern planting belt. The distance from plantation to plant is short, so wood arrives quickly and moisture does not drift from sitting in a pile for months.

From Trang it is an hour to Phatthalung, two to Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat, two and a half to Songkhla — most Southern plants within a single day.
