Thailand rubber production and the provinces that grow the most

Thailand plants 22.6 million rai of rubber across 67 provinces and produced 4.71 million tons in 2023 — the largest producer in the world — with over 1.7 million smallholder households. These figures explain why rubberwood biomass supply is real and continuous rather than scarce.

The South holds more than half
The South accounts for 13.6 million rai, or 60% of the national total. The Northeast follows with 5.2 million rai, or 23%.
The reason is climate: the South is hot, humid and not especially windy — the conditions rubber prefers. Planting has concentrated there from the beginning.
For anyone sourcing biomass fuel, that 60% is why Southern plants do not have to haul wood across the country. The distance from plantation to furnace is far shorter than elsewhere.
Where planting is densest
Songkhla leads nationally, with 1,654,309 rai suitable for rubber and an average yield of 2,234 kg per rai. Its densest districts are:
- Sadao, 435,961 rai
- Na Thawi, 317,226 rai
- Saba Yoi, 298,680 rai
In the Northeast, Bueng Kan has the largest planted area, reflecting rubber's spread beyond the South over the past two decades.
It started in Trang
Rubber planting in Thailand began around 1899–1901, when Phraya Rasadanupradit, governor of Trang, brought seed from Malaysia and planted it at Kantang district. Locals called them "Thesa trees".

Why this matters to a fuel buyer
22.6 million rai means felling for replanting happens constantly. A rubber tree yields economically for roughly 20–25 years, then has to come out.
The wood from that cycle is not an incidental by-product — it is supply that can be forecast from planted area and plantation age. That is the difference between rubberwood biomass and agricultural residues that appear only in certain seasons.
